In reply to <a href="https://lisabaldwinwriter.com/adult-child-estrangement/comment-page-1/#comment-208">Becky</a>.

Thank you for reaching out – my heart is with you as I learn that you are also dealing with the sorrow and loss of adult child estrangement.

I began writing about estrangement a few years ago once I discovered that so many families, including ours, are dealing with this problem. It feels like a fatal wound to your heart and, for many, the pain doesn't subside, even after many years.

I am still learning how to navigate this loss and have written about this journey in my book, Letters From Mom: A Loving Reach Into the Silence That Separates Us (you can find the link on my home page). The book also includes a compilation of letters from moms to their estranged adult children that offers readers connection and compassionate counsel. I encourage you to pick up a copy and hope it is a source of encouragement and comfort to you.

You are not alone. I wish you God’s presence and peace.

We have not seen our daughter in 7 years. She and our first grandchild used to spend the majority of their days with me. He turns 10 this month. The last time we saw him, he was 2. He doesn't even know we exist most likely. I have come to the brink of ending my life; the pain is that bad. Still. I've read books. I've joined groups. I've cried gallons and gallons of tears. I've moved on, thankful for the kids who still talk to me and the grandkids I still have. The heartbreak, though, is still at times unbearable. I feel like such a failure.

Dear Lisa,
Thank you for these postings. So often we feel alone in our children's rejection. I had no idea there were so many others facing the same thing. It offers a modicum of comfort. Thank you for writing a book on this painful subject.

I have been estranged from my daughter for 1 year now. It has crippled us. Our story is unique and I would be willing to share. Thank you for writing your blog and book. It’s desperately needed. I look forward to reading it. God bless us all as we wait…..
